NY Steps Up Rent-Stabilization Enforcement

New York Attorney General Letitia James has announced the first settlement under a new enforcement initiative targeting NYC buildings that should be rent stabilized but were not properly registered with the State.
The settlement requires a Brooklyn landlord to return all units in the building to rent stabilization, provide rent-stabilized leases, and address hazardous conditions. The Attorney General’s Office reports that more than 50 landlords have already been contacted through the initiative, resulting in 131 units being returned to rent stabilization.
For NYC property owners, this initiative highlights the importance of properly determining a building’s regulatory status and maintaining accurate registrations, leases, and rent records.
